Nils went through every stage of sailing and felt the same thing missing at each one: nobody had led him to what matters beyond the navigation. The sea checks up on whatever the training claimed.

As a young Cruising Instructor he watched an anxious sailor break down before her first departure in charge of the boat. He had no tools to help her, and it ended in tears. Channel Zero grew out of the question of how such cases should be handled.
