B2
What makes sailing so demanding mentally?
Six things come together:
- Duration and solitude. A race or a passage lasts hours or days. You are alone with your head, no time out, no substitution.
- No final whistle. You cannot abandon a mistake and start again. You sail on with it.
- Real risk. Wind, sea, darkness. Anyone who cannot steer their fear decides badly, precisely when it counts.
- Waiting and enduring. Calm, delay, hours of nothing. Patience is a requirement here, not a talent.
- Shared responsibility. In a crew, everything hangs on communication and clear roles under pressure.
- Control of the uncontrollable. Weather and water will never obey you. The only thing you can steer is your head.
